Mourning Dove Banding Program

Mourning Dove Banding Program

The Mourning Dove Banding Program is a long term, nation-wide, banding study, staffed almost completely by trained and dedicated volunteers. The purpose is to estimate modern band reporting and harvest rates and is only part of a larger study designed to produce comprehensive nation-wide estimates of harvest and survival rates as input variables for population models of mourning doves on a national level.

For volunteers, it is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience with wildlife. It can also be an exciting family project for summer break as the banding study is held July 1 - August 20 each year.

As this is a federally regulated program requiring a permit, all interested volunteers should check out the volunteer requirements and references to get involved.
