Mourning Dove Banding Program

Mourning Dove Banding Program

The Mourning Dove Banding Program is a long term, nation-wide, population study, staffed by State and Federal scientists, and trained and dedicated volunteers. The purpose is to use modern band reporting and harvest rates to use as a part of a larger study designed to determine population estimates on a management unit and national level.

For dedicated volunteers, it is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience with wildlife. It can also be an exciting family project for summer break as the banding is conducted June 1 - August 20 each year.

Mourning doves are migratory and covered under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, and regulated by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Trapping and banding migratory birds require specific training, experience and permitting.
