Mourning Dove Banding Program

Mourning Dove Banding Program

The Mourning Dove Banding Program is a long term, nation-wide, banding study, staffed almost completely by trained and dedicated volunteers. The purpose is to estimate modern band reporting and harvest rates and is only part of a larger study designed to produce comprehensive nation-wide estimates of harvest and survival rates as input variables for population models of mourning doves on a national level.

For volunteers, it is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience with wildlife. It can also be an exciting family project for summer break as the banding study is held from July 1st to August 20th each year.

As this is a federally regulated program requiring a permit, all interested volunteers should check out the volunteer requirements and volunteer reference to get involved.
