Mission Statement
"The Mission of the Department of Fish and Game is to manage California's diverse fish, wildlife, and plant resources, and the habitats upon which they depend, for their ecological values and for their use and enjoyment by the public."
Introduction
In 2000, Congress enacted the State Wildlife Grants Program to support state programs that broadly benefit wildlife and habitats, particularly those addressing "species of greatest conservation need." As a requirement for receiving federal funds under this program, state wildlife agencies were to have submitted a state wildlife action plan to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service by October 2005.
California Wildlife: Conservation Challenges, the state's wildlife action plan, was developed and produced as a collaboration between the California Department of Fish and Game and the Wildlife Health Center at the University of California, Davis. The Wildlife Health Center managed scoping meetings, expert consultations, conservation workshops, and prepared the report and Web publications. Fish and Game provided guidance, technical analyses, and critical review and editing.

Overview of the Web site
This Web site provides numerous resources for policy-makers, conservation planners and practitioners, wildlife managers, and wildlife educators and naturalists.
The full California Wildlife Action Plan or its parts may be downloaded. The Wildlife Species Matrix allows you to query information about California's species at risk.
The Wildlife Monitoring Survey allows you to locate and sort wildlife monitoring projects across the state.
Summaries are provided for statewide topics and for each region in the Wildlife Action Plan.
Under Information Sources there are links to three comprehensive lists of information on species, habitats, and conservation. The Species Groups and Habitat page provides a good list of information sources about species groups and habitats in the state. The Fish and Game Sources page lists the wildlife, habitat, and conservation databases available on the Web from the Department of Fish and Game. The Private Lands Conservation page provides a comprehensive list of programs and resources to assist private landowners with their conservation efforts.
Results of the workshops held as part of the Wildlife Action Plan development process are downloadable as Acrobat (.pdf) files.
Links are provided to relevant Fish and Game program Web sites and to the UC Davis Wildlife Health Center web site.
Public Comment Period
Due to requests from the public and interested organizations, DFG extended the original review period for the Draft Wildlife Action Plan to May 5 through July 21, 2006.
