Salmon Tours on the Lower Yuba River

King salmon

By late September the fall run of King Salmon returns from the sea to spawn in the Yuba River east of Marysville. Join us for a unique salmon viewing opportunity via access provided by the UC Sierra Foothill Research and Extension Center (SFREC). Each tour, about ninety minutes, are led by a naturalist each Saturday beginning late September through October at 10 AM, 12:30 and 2:30 PM.

We’ll explore a section of the Yuba River with scenic views and close proximity to salmon spawning beds. The tour will focus on the salmon life cycle and natural history. Viewing opportunities of salmon egg laying and salmon redds (nests) will be the main focus, while we also look for Bald Eagle, Osprey, Common Merganser, Belted Kingfisher and American Dipper and more.

The tour will involve some short hiking over uneven terrain and cobbles to and along the river; however, a fully accessible shade shelter with picnic tables offers scenic views of the nearby river as well as a short interpretive talk.

Tour group meets at the SFREC Yuba River Education Center lot by the large shelter. Directions will be provided upon registration. Space is limited to 25 per tour with closely supervised children allowed. There is no public access to this site outside of your scheduled tour. Smoking is not permitted. Further site restrictions and policies may apply.

Dress for changeable weather and bring drinking water and snacks. Binoculars are suggested for wildlife viewing opportunities. A spotting scope and a few loaner binoculars will be available. A restroom is available at the site.
