Torch/Platform Irene Oil Spill

LOCATION offshore and coastline, northern Santa Barbara County
DATE September 28, 1997
INCIDENT SUMMARY An undersea pipeline, linking the offshore oil platform Irene with the mainland, ruptured, releasing oil into the ocean. This oil formed surface slicks and washed ashore, primarily at Surf Beach, Vandenberg Air Force Base.

SETTLEMENT DETAILS The trustees settled the NRDA portion of the case for $1.9 million.
STATUS OF RESTORATION Trustee Council prepared draft Restoration Plan/Environmental Assessment dated March 13, 2006 and is for review and public comments will be accepted through June 21, 2006. April 19, 2006 a public workshop was held to solicit cements on the draft Restoration Plan/Environmental Assessment.
