Avila I Oil Spill
- LOCATION: Avila Beach, San Luis Obispo County.
- DATE: August 3, 1992
- INCIDENT SUMMARY: A pipeline break resulted in the spill of approximately 24,200 gallons of crude oil. Oil flowed down a gully, over a cliff face, and into the Pacific Ocean.
- RESPONSIBLE PARTY: Unocal
- NATURAL RESOURCE TRUSTEES: California Department of Fish and Wildlife; United States Fish and Wildlife Service.
- RESOURCES IMPACTED: Birds (84 recovered, including 11 Brown Pelicans); sea otters (5 oiled); fish (including king salmon).
- SETTLEMENT DETAILS: The trustees settled the NRDA portion of the case for $1.4 million.
- STATUS OF RESTORATION: Restoration projects completed; see Available Documents for details.
