Meeting Objectives

  • Increase public knowledge about the MLPA Initiative
  • Identify methods the public and stakeholders can use to become more actively engaged in the MLPA Initiative process
  • Clarify the criteria being used and qualities sought for nominees to create an effective MLPA North Central Coast Regional Stakeholder Group

I. Welcome, introductions, objectives and format (15 minutes)

II. Brief overview (30 minutes)

  • California Marine Life Protection Act
  • What are marine protected areas?
  • MLPA Initiative Second Phase process - what is it, and what is the timeline?
  • Who are the groups involved in the MLPA Initiative?
  • MLPA North Central Coast Regional Profile
  • MLPA North Central Coast Project and regional stakeholder group
  • Other opportunities for public involvement in the process (see handout)
  • Questions about the initiative process?

III. General questions for small group discussions (50 minutes)

  • Do you have further questions?
  • What are your key interests and issues?
  • What do you see as the challenges and opportunities for this project?
  • What process suggestions would you offer to improve the likelihood of success?

IV. Wrap up and next steps (25 minutes)

  • Representative from each breakout group to "report" on top two or three key points from the small group discussion
  • Facilitators to make brief synthesis comments based on reporting from groups
  • Review selection criteria for regional stakeholder group members
  • Announce sign up sheet for electronic mailing list (or visit website to add)
  • MLPA staff will compile and seriously consider questions and comments, reporting back to the MLPA Blue Ribbon Task Force on March 29
