Newsroom Overview

Welcome to the Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) Initiative Newsroom.

The information provides an overview of the MLPA Initiative's marine protected area (MPA) planning process in the North Coast Study Region.

To ensure that local needs are addressed in the MPA planning process, California’s 1,100-mile coastline has been divided into five study regions. The North Coast Study Region, which encompasses state waters from the California-Oregon border to Alder Creek near Point Arena in Mendocino County, is the fourth of the five regions to undergo this process.

The North Coast MPA planning and redesign process began in June 2009 with a series of introductory workshops and open houses. Existing marine protected areas within the MLPA North Coast Study Region are currently being evaluated and redesigned with input from the public, a regional stakeholder group, a science advisory team, a blue ribbon task force, the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG), the California Department of Parks and Recreation, and other interested parties. The MLPA north coast regional planning process is expected to conclude in December 2010.

To obtain information on other regions, visit the study region website: central coast, north central coast, and south coast.
