This page contains information about unscheduled, in-season regulation changes for recreational and commercial ocean fishing in 2007 (view the commercial and recreational salmon seasons).
The Department is required to notify the public of in-season regulation changes for groundfish at least 10 days before the new regulations becomes effective, via news release.

Summary of Regulation Changes
Effective Date: October 1, 2007
Changes to the 2007 Recreational Fishing Regulations
The boat-based sport fishery for rockfish, lingcod, cabezon, and greenlings will close from Pigeon Point to the Oregon Border (North and North-Central Management Areas) on October 1, 2007. Shore-based anglers and divers are not affected by this action. The closure will remain in effect through the end of the 2007 calendar year.

Commercial California Sheephead Fishery Closure
The commercial fishery for California sheephead will close on October 1, 2007 at 12:01 a.m. Projections from recent landings indicate the annual harvest allotment for California sheephead of 75,200 pounds will be reached by October 1, 2007. The fishery will remain closed through the end of the year.

Changes for Commercial Cabezon Fishery
The commercial cabezon cumulative trip limits will be reduced from 900 pounds to 200 pounds for September October. The trip limit for the November December period remains at 100 pounds.

Commercial Greenling Fishery Closure
Based on landing receipts and dockside tabulation the commercial greenling allocation of 3,400 pounds is expected to be met by August 1, 2007. In May 2002 the Fish and Game Commission adopted regulations giving the DFG authority to close the fishery when their allowable harvest levels are projected to be reached. The recreational greenling fishery will remain open.

Commercial Groundfish Regulation Changes

North of 40°10' N. Lat.
- Limited Entry Trawl - Increase longspine thornyhead limits using large and small footrope gear to 25,000 lb/2 months.
South of 40°10' N. Lat.
- Limited Entry Trawl - Increase Dover sole limits to 80,000 lb/2 months.
- Limited Entry Trawl - Increase chilipepper rockfish limits using small footrope gear to 800 lb/month.
- Limited Entry Fixed Gear (south of 34°27' N. Lat.) - Increase shortspine thornyhead limits to 3,000 lb from August 1- 31, 2007 only. Limits will decrease to 2,000 lb/2 months on September 1, 2007.
- Open Access (south of 36° N. Lat.) - Increase sablefish daily trip limit to 350 lb/day or one landing per week of up to 1,050 lb.
Regulations will remain in effect through to the end of the year.
