South Fork Wildlife Area - Kern County

Location: 55 miles east of Bakersfield on Highway 178 to east end of Lake Isabella on the South Fork Kern River.

Nearby recreational areas: Hanning Flat Recreation Area on north side of lake. To the east are The Nature Conservancy's Kern River Preserve and Department of Fish & Game's Canebrake Ecological Reserve near Weldon.

Directions: 10 miles east of town of Lake Isabella on Highway 178 to Sierra Way. Turn north on Sierra Way. Parking lots for South Fork WA are on the south and north side of the wildlife area. Access to the southern parking is directly off of Highway 178 prior to Sierra Way turnoff. Access to the northern parking lot is directly off of Sierra Way.

Description: 1,271 acres of Valley Foothill Riparian Habitat dominated by cottonwood and willow trees. Excellent area for birding with over 315 species utilizing the Kern River Valley. Many of the birds are Neotropical migrants nesting and foraging in the riparian woodlands during summer before flying to Central and South America for the winter. Also look for birds of prey (hawks, eagles, osprey), hummingbirds, and shore and water birds (herons, egrets, waterfowl) in and around the lake. Mammals include mule deer, beaver, coyotes, gray fox, bobcat, raccoons.

Lake Isabella provides recreational opportunities for fishing, hunting, canoeing, kayaking and hiking. Wildlife area is subject to flooding during years of high run-off.
