Short Term Closure of Grizzly Island for Elk Hunt
Beginning July 27 the DFG will temporarily close part of Grizzly Island Wildlife Area for the annual tule elk hunt. The Grizzly Island Unit of the Solano County wildlife area will be closed through Sept. 13, during which time only persons with authorized elk tags will be allowed.
During the temporary closure, we recommend visiting the following alternative areas for hiking, nature viewing, dog training and fishing opportunities within the Suisun Marsh:
- Hill Slough Wildlife Area: located on Grizzly Island Road, right off of Highway 12 in Suisun, before the one-lane bridge.
- Peytonia Slough Ecological Reserve: located at the foot of Kellogg Street in Suisun City, near the marina.
- Belden's Landing Fishing Access and Boat Launch Ramp: located on Grizzly Island Road.
- Island Slough Fishing Access: located on Grizzly Island Road.
Rabbit Hunting Opportunities at Grizzly Island Wildlife Area
Grizzly Island Wildlife Area in Solano County will open daily to licensed hunters for the taking of rabbits from July 1 through July 26.
The bag limit for cottontails is five per day and 10 in possession. There is no bag or possession limit for jackrabbits. Shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. Only shotguns and bow and arrows may be used during this hunt (no rifles or pistols). Shotguns must be no larger than 12-gauge. Non-toxic shot is required.
Hunters must fill out a daily permit at Grizzly Island Wildlife Area's Visitor's Registration Booth. There is no fee for this permit. A map is available at the booth showing areas open and closed to rabbit hunting.
