Field Work and Project History

Since 1999 the California Department of Fish and Game, in cooperation with the Lake Davis Steering Committee, has been implementing the recommendations in Managing Northern Pike in Lake Davis, a Plan for Y2000. This plan recommends thirteen "control and containment" activities to control the pike population, to keep it confined to Lake Davis, and to prevent the type of pike population explostion that occurred before the 1997 rotenone treatment. These methods include use of electrofishing boats, a variety of nets including a purse seine, detonation cord, and improved public outreach and education activities. The plan encourages trying new ideas and discarding the least effective ones as the results become known. Field season reports are prepared which summarize these efforts.

In 2003, CDFG evaluated the previous 3½ years of pike removal in a summary report. Data indicated pike numbers continued to increase in spite of the control efforts. All methods succeeded in removing some pike from the reservoir, but they did not preven a population increase. By September 2005, over 55,000 pike have been removed.
