Elements of Successful Conservation Planning

  1. Use collaborative decision-making processes
  2. Be flexible and adapt as new information becomes available
  3. Use neutral facilitators that are well informed about natural resource issues and run efficient meetings
  4. Incorporate regional and national interests into locally-driven initiatives
  5. Emphasize market-based incentives
  6. Use ecosystem-based approach when developing on-the-ground management strategies
  7. Support decisions with data and information that is credible, objectives, unbiased, relevant, and timely
  8. Clearly define participant roles and authorities
  9. Build trust
  10. Promote leadership among participants in different aspects of the project
  11. Maintain participant continuity if possible, and deal with transitions effectively when they occur
  12. Recognize and address participant time and resource limitations
  13. Build accountability and organizational commitment to the process
