Fishing in the City
Family Learn-to-Fish Program
Taking youth and their families fishing
since 1995
A clinic consisting of a series of learning stations is offered to provide kids and their families the requisite skills and knowledge they need to fish on their own.
Learning Stations Include:
- Welcome and Overview
- Knots
- Safety/Ethics
- Casting
- Rigging
- Non point source pollution/urban runoff
Participants must complete the entire clinic in order to borrow equipment, receive tackle, bait or fish in the reserved area. Participants are put into groups of 10 and a volunteer leader guides the group through the stations.
There is no fee for these programs and all equipment is provided. A park entry or parking fee may be charged by the lake manager. Each adult may bring up to 2 children. A driver’s license is required as a security deposit for borrowed equipment. Each participant will be loaned a fishing rod and receives a fully stocked tackle box and a book of fishing to keep.
Clinics generally begin at 8 AM and are open on a first come-first served basis for up to 150 people. It takes about 40 minutes to complete the clinic and participants may then fish until the event is over, usually around noon. The last learning clinic begins at 10 AM or when the maximum event capacity has been reached.
Donations payable to South Bay Fishing in the city are welcome and are fully tax-deductible. For more information on donating to SBFIC, contact Brian Allen at Salmonbla@aol.com.
The role of parent at events...
Parents are expected to participate in the clinic with their child. They are encouraged to be attentive and learn the skills and information presented in order to assist their child. Parents are not allowed to fish as the focus is on teaching and supporting youth angling skills development.
