San Joaquin Fish Hatchery
History
The San Joaquin Hatchery started raising fish in 1954. Going into full production in 1955, San Joaquin is now one of the Department of Fish and Wildlife’s largest fish producing hatcheries. The hatchery’s main role is to provide recreational fishing opportunities for the public.
Today, fish feed is manufactured and automatic feeders and blower trucks are used to make feeding quick and easy. However, in the early days of the hatchery, workers use to cut up raw meat to feed the fish.
